Everyone has a New Year's Resolution or a Birthday Resolution or a 1st day of the month Resolution or a New Season Resolution or a Monday Resolution. I've played that game many times before and just this year I realized why none of my resolutions worked, whether they never got started, or they never finished. They never worked because I never dealt with the root of the resolution. I never took the time to understand why I needed a "start date" to make something happen.
Most resolutions are based upon a major life change that you need to kick start. Like losing weight, going back to school, starting that business, reading more, going back to church, spending time with your family and so on. And honestly those resolutions are cool and I hope you achieve your goals but the real question is, why haven't you done those things before? If those things are so important to you than why haven't they happened yet? Why does it take January 1st or a Monday for you to realize you need to put those things into action? And trust me I used to be a victim too, then I noticed it didn't really matter when I planned to start the change. If I never deal with what is keeping me from making the transition than no difference will occur anyway.
Truthfully, we have all these things that we want to do but a lot of times those things don't get accomplished because our mind is our greatest battle ground. We are in a constant fight to convince ourselves we are worth it, we deserve it, this can happen for us. But it's so easy to believe the negative in all aspects of our lives. That's why it's so simple to give up on your resolution. You convince yourself that you aren't going to make it, you don't deserve that success, you don't deserve that recognition, I'm not good enough for that accomplishment anyway. Over and over again we doubt ourselves and fall into the deep dark hole of unbelief. Not only do we carry the negative things we think about ourselves but the negative things others think about us too. The work it takes to mute that and focus on the better is tremendous. We must remember that there is a constant exchange between our thoughts and our actions. If we think better, we ultimately can be & do better.
So I encourage you to dig deeper with your resolutions. I encourage you to make sure you start with your core in order for the change to take flight on the surface. And don't wait until January 1st again to make alterations. When you feel the need to do something differently, just do it no matter the start date.
My resolution this year is to not have one. I just want to make sure I take care of everything within myself. It's like when people say, how can you expect someone else to love you when you can't love yourself? Same goes for this, how can you expect these resolutions to work when you haven't worked in yourself?
#dearNewYear I'm a work in progress.
