As you know I am a makeup artist. I realized early on in my career that women want it simple. They want to be able to throw it together for work and put it together for a night out. Here are my tips to get you through the process of makeup. We will begin with the most important thing, FOUNDATION.
First of all if you are unsure of your foundation color go to the mall, Ulta, or Sephora and get some samples. DON"T COMMIT! That is the biggest mistake women make when going makeup shopping. You get pressured to purchase the foundation they've tried on you in bad lighting. Drop the bottle and walk out of there with SAMPLES. You can try as much as you want and not feel guilty about not buying anything!
You have to ask yourself a few questions before looking for foundation.
1. Do you want full coverage, medium coverage or light coverage? Which translates into, do you want to cover the world, do you want to cover enough, or do you want to look the most like yourself?
2. Do you want a matte finish, natural finish or dewy finish? Which translates to, do you want to look dry, natural or glowing for the Gods?
3. Budget? Which translates to, get what you can afford but splurge if you fall in love!
Once you answer all of those questions you can walk into any beauty store or approach any beauty counter and find what best fits your wants. The reason I stress samples is because a lot of times, especially for women of color, you aren't going to be able to use just one foundation. We have so many tones and undertones, we usually need to use 2 foundation colors. So if you get help from a beauty consultant make sure you say to them, I know I may need 2 foundation colors and I am okay with that. See, if you don't say that to them they will make you fit into one color that really isn't yours. Then you end up like everyone else with a full bottle of Mac Studio Fix on your vanity and just going out with lipstick and mascara.
I don't want to overload you, so just answer those questions and get to your sampling. Make sure to mark your favorites and when you are ready commit to the best!
